Finger Plays!

This week's class was so much fun! I really thought it was great that we did something creative like this. Finger plays will be a great learning strategy in the classroom. I did my finger play with a Raffi song. I had never heard the song before but I really enjoyed it. This weekend I got a chance to show my mom my finger play (she is a teacher) and she thought that it was a great idea. I think that we could really make something like this in our classrooms with children that were a little older. If we wanted to do it with younger children then they could pick out everything they wanted and then we as the teachers could glue everything on.

Another fun idea would be to have parents come in and do this activity with their children. It would be great to have parents come in and pick a song and then design a puppet with their children. I think that it is always important to incorporate the parents in our activties. Having parents in the classroom is very important to me!

  1. Up until this year I had never heard about Finger Plays, but now we have had experience in multiple classes--and I am so thrilled that we have! Finger plays seem so simple, but they really are an effective teaching method in the classroom. I like your idea of having the parents join in. Family involvement is key to any successful classroom.

  2. I think it would be great for a large variety of these to be available at the beginning of the year for use in the classroom. Parent involvement is a great idea; having a classroom set of finger play gloves available for "check-out" by the parents would be a great way to get them involved in the classroom and at home with their children. They could also come in and do the finger play with the class as a whole. I'm sure the children would love to have their parents come in as a special treat to do a finger play.

  3. Finger plays are a great way to get children engaged. Children would have even more fun when they get to decorate and create their own finger plays. Those are the most unique and personal to them. Its a great way to incorporate music into the classroom and finger plays can be created to go along with anything you are teaching.

  4. Your blog post listed two great ideas to engage children in the classroom. The great things about finger plays is that they are engaging and memorable. These two things can make teacher and daily routines a lot easier. The next great idea was suggesting family members do finger plays in the classroom. Any time their is time for family involvement, it is almost always a good idea.

  5. Bringing parents into the classroom and showing them something creative like making a finger play is such a perfect opportunity to show them how they can be involved in their child's literacy development. This type of activity would inspire them to try new things with their child and feel empowered to develop more fun activities that promote their child's literacy.
