Child's Interest

It is so important in the classroom to explore literature that the children are interested in. It will be much more productive in the classroom when students are allowed to pick books that they find interest in. As they get older they will most likely start using "level readers" and will start to lose the love for reading. While we have them when they are young, we need to make sure that we are starting that loving foundation for reading.  Again, we discussed more finger plays in the classroom. I think that it would be wonderful to find texts that the children love and then make a finger play as a class for that book. This is something that will get them more interested in the book. This will also help them to burn some energy because they will be able to get up and move around in the classroom.

  1. I agree that having literature in the classroom that children are interested in and that they get to choose is very important. I feel that if children don't get a chance to choose literature that they like that that will lead to a dislike of reading. Children have different interests and if you are presenting books that they are not interested in they could start to dislike books and never like reading in any form.

  2. There are so many books that are in song form and can be adapted into a fingerplay or just for use as a song in the classroom. For example, The Wheels on the Bus is great for reading, singing and doing a fingerplay. If a teacher really wanted to, any book can essentially be turned into a song.

  3. You are right, unfortunately a lot of students lose interest in reading with age. One reason is I feel teachers in older grade levels just go through the motions when they read to the class. They read as if they have to and not as if the story is meaningful or even good. Teachers can try to help halt the progression of disinterest by using enthusiasm when they read.

  4. Your mentioning of the need to make sure that we are starting that loving foundation for reading in children as soon as possible is key to success in a classroom. As we have learned, literacy is the strong foundation that allows a child to build on multiple areas of development. And as you mentioned, it can even help with physical development through the use of fingerplays!
